About

My professional yachting career grew from an early passion for sailing developed during my university years in South Africa. While completing my degree, I sailed recreationally and assisted a close friend who was developing entry-level seamanship courses for the South African Navy. Supporting him in course preparation further strengthened my practical seamanship and foundational knowledge. After university, I briefly worked as an events manager, but a chance conversation at my local yacht club introduced me to the possibility of professional yacht deliveries. Recognising the opportunity, I sold my belongings, enrolled in formal training in Cape Town, and obtained my Day Skipper qualification. While on course, I was hired as crew for a delivery of a 40ft Moorings catamaran from Cape Town to Marsh Harbour, Bahamas. After 52 days at sea, I arrived in the Caribbean and secured work skippering a 42ft Lagoon catamaran for private cruising in the Bahamas, later delivering the vessel to Long Island, New York via Fort Lauderdale. It was in Fort Lauderdale that I was first exposed to the superyacht industry and committed fully to it as a long-term career. I joined a 47m sloop-rigged motor sailor, where I was promoted to Mate within 18 months and remained for a further period operating commercially and completing successful charters. I left to complete my Officer of the Watch training, continuing to work closely with the Captain, who became a long-standing mentor. Following my certification, I served as OOW on a motor yacht for 18 months, obtaining my MCA CoC while cruising extensively throughout the Mediterranean, Maldives, Caribbean, Mexico, and the U.S. East Coast. I then completed my Captain’s courses at MPT in Fort Lauderdale before joining a new-build 50m Heesen (Hull No.1) in the Netherlands. After delivery, the yacht spent an extended Mediterranean season with the owner onboard, who stayed on board for 4 months of the summer. I subsequently rejoined my former Captain on a 45m Feadship operating commercially. During this period, I improved on and ran a full Safety Management System while remaining hands-on on deck, balancing operational leadership with presentation standards. I passed my MCA Master 500GT oral examination while onboard. When the Feadship was offered for sale, I followed the Captain onto a major refit project, arriving ahead of him to find the programme stalled. I took immediate initiative with the shipyard and crew, ensuring work commenced without delay. The yacht returned to charter service, was presented at the Monaco Yacht Show, and won an award for Best Refit. I later accepted my first Captain position on a heavily chartered 32m yacht, delivering her from the Caribbean to Fort Lauderdale and onward to Palma. The programme included extensive charter operations throughout the Mediterranean, followed by wintering in Italy. During this period, I completed my MCA Master 3000GT. At the Monaco Yacht Show, my wife and I were recruited as a Captain/Chief Stewardess team by an Operational Manager with whom I would work across several vessels. After a successful charter-focused programme, we were moved onto a 52m Amels undergoing a major refit. I was selected specifically to take command of this complex project, which included major structural modifications, new bridge layout design, updated stability documentation, and full AV/IT renewal. Despite the scale of the works, the yacht was delivered on time for her first guest programme in the Balearics. Since then I have worked closely with the management company, continued to command and support demanding private and charter programmes, regularly joining yachts mid-season, managing intensive itineraries and rapid turnarounds, and operating confidently across all major cruising regions. My career has been defined by adaptability, calm leadership under pressure, and a strong commitment to safe, professional yacht operations.
