MCA Yacht Unlimited CoC: The New 2026 Route Beyond 3,000 GT

Since May 2026, eligible holders of MCA-issued deck CoCs can progress to Chief Mate or Master on yachts above 3,000 GT without leaving the sector for cargo-ship sea time. Here is how the new route works.

For years, the MCA yacht deck pathway effectively stopped at Master (Yachts) less than 3,000 gross tonnage (GT). Officers aiming to command a larger yacht generally had to enter the merchant route through Officer of the Watch (OOW) Unlimited.

That changed on 18 May 2026. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency introduced two yacht-specific Certificates of Competency for the largest yachts: Chief Mate (Yachts) Unlimited and Master (Yachts) Unlimited.

The change matters to captains, chief officers and employers recruiting for yachts above 3,000 GT. It recognises qualifying yacht service, but is neither an automatic upgrade nor an unrestricted merchant-ship ticket.

The quick answer: the new MCA Yacht Unlimited CoC removes the tonnage ceiling for yacht service. A holder of an MCA-issued Master (Yachts) less than 3,000 GT can work towards it without restarting through merchant OOW, but must still meet the Chief Mate-level standard and applicable training, certificate, service and oral-exam requirements.

What changed in May 2026?

The MCA launched the Yacht Unlimited pathway on 18 May 2026. The rules appear in section 4 of MSN 1858 Amendment 2.

There are two new management-level, STCW Regulation II/2 capacities:

  • Chief Mate (Yachts) Unlimited.
  • Master (Yachts) Unlimited.

The new route accepts appropriate yacht service and yacht-focused management training, avoiding the previous detour through merchant qualifications and cargo-vessel experience.

The notice calls it an interim solution, so check the current version before committing to a course or contract.

What does “Yacht Unlimited” actually allow?

“Unlimited” removes the tonnage and geographical limits for yacht service, subject to safe-manning, flag and role requirements.

It does not create unrestricted merchant authority. The CoCs remain yacht-restricted; MSN 1858 also permits yacht-restricted qualifications on qualifying sail-training vessels.

It also differs from RYA Yachtmaster Ocean and IYT Master of Yachts Unlimited. The new MCA CoCs are STCW Regulation II/2 management-level certificates with no tonnage ceiling for yachts.

If an advert asks for “Master Unlimited”, clarify whether it requires the unrestricted merchant CoC or the unlimited-tonnage CoC restricted to yachts. The names are close; their scopes are not identical.

Which starting certificate do you hold?

The practical route depends on your current MCA-issued CoC and the capacity in which you completed your service.

Master (Yachts) less than 3,000 GT

This is accepted for Chief Mate entry. For Master, the route-specific minimum is six months as Master, including three at sea, on a vessel of at least 500 GT. The Chief Mate standard, Master oral and timing caveat still apply.

OOW Unlimited

Chief Mate entry requires 12 months’ yacht service as OOW, including six at sea, all on yachts of at least 500 GT. A separate 36-month Master option exists.

Chief Mate Unlimited

The Master route accepts 12 months’ yacht service as Chief Mate, including six at sea, all on yachts of at least 500 GT. The holder is exempt from the Yacht Unlimited Chief Mate oral, but not the Master oral.

What is required for Chief Mate (Yachts) Unlimited?

Chief Mate is the management-level gateway. Section 4.3 requires the following.

Entry certificate and sea service

You must hold either:

  • Master (Yachts) less than 3,000 GT; or
  • OOW Unlimited with at least 12 months’ onboard yacht service as OOW, including at least 6 months’ seagoing service, all on a yacht of 500 GT or more.

Unless stated otherwise, CoCs in the notice mean MCA-issued certificates. NAEST Management is required for both new capacities.

Academic modules and assessments

The route lists nine management-level subjects:

  • Applied Marine Meteorology.
  • Management Level Passage Planning.
  • Management of Bridge Operations.
  • Management of Yacht Operations.
  • Marine Engineering Systems.
  • Marine Vessels – Structures and Maintenance.
  • Ship Stability: Theory and Practical Application.
  • Shipboard Management.
  • Shipmaster’s Law and Business.

Candidates must also pass the MCA assessments in Chief Mate Navigation and Stability (Yacht Unlimited).

The nine modules are waived only for holders of a defined MCA-approved management-level award from an approved college: an Honours Degree, Foundation Degree, Scottish Professional Diploma, Diploma of Higher Education, Higher National Diploma or Advanced Diploma. The notice does not expressly extend that waiver to the Navigation and Stability assessments.

Ask an approved college or the MCA to map your exact award in writing; a similar name or individual module may not qualify.

Medical, ancillary certificates and oral examination

You need a valid ENG1 or accepted equivalent and section 6’s ancillary certificates: the applicable STCW safety courses, PSCRB, Advanced Fire Fighting, Medical First Aid, Medical Care, ECDIS, GMDSS GOC, HELM Management and NAEST Management. PSSR is one of these; see what changed in PSSR training in 2026. Check the official table for acceptance and updating rules.

A restricted-yacht PSCRB CoP may be accepted, but the resulting CoC is endorsed “Not for use on ships equipped with davit launched lifeboats”. The MCA cannot guarantee other administrations will accept that restricted CoP.

The Chief Mate oral is normally required. Master (Yachts) less than 3,000 GT and Chief Mate Unlimited holders are exempt from it, but not from other requirements or the later Master oral.

What is required for Master (Yachts) Unlimited?

First, you must hold or meet the requirements for Chief Mate (Yachts) Unlimited. Master 3,000 GT does not convert automatically.

You must then satisfy one of the three sea-service routes set out in section 4.4:

  1. Chief Mate route: while holding Chief Mate (Yachts) Unlimited or Chief Mate Unlimited, complete at least 12 months’ onboard yacht service as Chief Mate, including at least 6 months’ seagoing service. All of it must be on a yacht of at least 500 GT.
  2. Master 3,000 GT route: while holding Master (Yachts) less than 3,000 GT, the route-specific minimum is 6 months’ onboard yacht service as Master, including at least 3 months’ seagoing service. All of it must be on a vessel of at least 500 GT.
  3. OOW Unlimited route: while holding OOW Unlimited, complete at least 36 months’ onboard yacht service as OOW, including at least 15 months’ seagoing service. The onboard service must be on vessels of at least 15 metres, and the seagoing service must be on vessels of at least 500 GT.

You also need the applicable ancillary certificates, a valid ENG1 or accepted equivalent, and a pass in the MCA Master Unlimited GT Yacht oral examination.

Qualifying command service already gained on a yacht of 500 GT or more may fit the six-month route. It does not bypass the Chief Mate-level standard; also read the timing caveat below.

How does the MCA count and verify yacht service?

The notice distinguishes:

  • Onboard yacht service is time signed on the yacht, regardless of the vessel’s activity.
  • Seagoing service is time spent at sea and can include qualifying time at anchor or on associated river and canal transits. At least four hours of working duty in 24 hours counts as one day.

Service can be on any flag. Dual deck-and-engine service counts at 50%.

The shorter Master route has an ambiguity. Sections 5.1 and 12.1 require six months of recent seagoing service but use different end points, while the route specifies three months at sea. The notice does not reconcile them. If relying on that route, get written MCA confirmation before booking or applying.

Keep discharge records and verifiable testimonials. A Master cannot sign their own testimonial; the owner or a responsible person at the yacht-management company must sign it.

Can you apply or book Yacht Unlimited training now?

The certification route is in force, and the MCA added official Chief Mate and Master (Yachts Unlimited) oral syllabuses on 17 June 2026.

Only nautical colleges approved for management-level unlimited CoCs may run the academic route. Management of Yacht Operations and Ship Stability need specific approval; partnerships with yacht training providers also need MCA oversight.

Before paying a deposit, ask the provider to confirm:

  • The exact Yacht Unlimited modules and assessments it is approved to deliver, and which organisation holds that approval.
  • Which previous qualifications it accepts and what remains outstanding.
  • The full course, assessment and Notice of Eligibility sequence for your record.

The MCA provider list predates the route. General approval does not prove approval for these modules.

The public MSF 4343 yacht deck application page also displays a pre-route form revision. MIN 655 Amendment 1 says applications that do not require a Training Record Book can be emailed, but it does not explain how to mark this new capacity on the older form. Confirm the current process with [email protected] or [email protected] before filing or paying.

What should captains and deck officers do next?

  1. Identify the exact ticket you hold. Record the issuer, capacity, regulation, tonnage and limitations.
  2. Audit your service and evidence. Separate onboard, seagoing and watchkeeping time; record the yacht’s GT and your capacity, then collect verifiable testimonials.
  3. Get a written training map. Ask an approved nautical college which modules and assessments remain and confirm its approval for them.
  4. Check current application instructions. Use the latest form, fee, evidence and Notice of Eligibility process.
  5. Prepare for the correct oral. Use the Yacht Unlimited syllabus and confirm whether the Chief Mate oral exemption applies to you.

Until the CoC is issued, describe your status accurately on your CV. “Working towards Master (Yachts) Unlimited” is not the same as holding it. Once issued, record the full capacity and limitation on your Yachtee crew profile, and compare it carefully with the requirements in current yacht jobs.

What should yacht employers put in a job advert?

Avoid using “Master Unlimited” as shorthand if the role can be filled by a yacht-specific CoC. State:

  • The exact capacity required: Master or Chief Mate.
  • The yacht’s GT, flag and operating area.
  • Whether Master (Yachts) Unlimited is accepted or an unrestricted Master Unlimited CoC is required.
  • Any required Flag State Endorsement or Certificate of Equivalent Competency.
  • Certificate validity, medical and ancillary requirements.

The MCA provides an online checker for UK CoCs and endorsements. Certificate verification does not replace a safe-manning or flag-state check, but it helps prevent an ambiguous CV label from becoming a late-stage hiring problem.

If you are recruiting a captain or senior deck officer, Yachtee lets you publish the role and manage applications in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Does Master 3,000 GT automatically become Master (Yachts) Unlimited?

No. It is an accepted starting certificate with a shorter service option, but you must still meet the Chief Mate (Yachts) Unlimited requirements and pass the Master oral.

Is Master (Yachts) Unlimited the same as Master Unlimited?

No. It remains yacht-restricted and does not grant unrestricted merchant Master authority. MSN 1858 separately permits yacht-restricted qualifications on qualifying sail-training vessels.

Can yacht sea time count towards an unlimited-tonnage yacht captain’s ticket?

Yes, if it meets the applicable rules for certificate held, capacity served, vessel size, seagoing proportion and timing.

Do I have to receive Chief Mate (Yachts) Unlimited before applying for Master?

Not necessarily. The notice says you must hold or meet the requirements for Chief Mate (Yachts) Unlimited. It does not waive that standard; confirm your sequence with the MCA or an approved college.

Is there also a Yacht Unlimited route for engineers?

The MCA’s May announcement said an engineer pathway was in development for later in 2026. As of 4 September, we found no officially published engineer route. This guide covers the deck pathway in MSN 1858 Amendment 2; do not apply its rules to engineering certification.

The practical takeaway

The Yacht Unlimited CoC closes a gap between modern superyachts and the yacht deck pathway. For a Master (Yachts) less than 3,000 GT with qualifying service, it can be more relevant than restarting through merchant OOW Unlimited.

It is still a full management-level qualification, not a paperwork conversion. Start with the current MCA notice, have your academic record and sea service mapped in writing, and verify that a provider is approved for the exact Yacht Unlimited training before spending money.
