Experience
First Mate/Deckhand/Photographer
Assisting the Captain with keeping watch, using the ships crane to deploy jet skis and the tender, anchoring, making fast and letting go and briefing the guests on safety equipment and use of toys. I have carried out a number of watches and can slot into whichever role is required on the day.
Marine Officer/Coxswain
CurrentResponsible as the master of the vessel. I manage the daily boarding/disembarkation of Pilots from the commercial vessels visiting the Port of Southampton, liaising directly with the ships and advising them which heading we require to create a safe Lee. I am line manager to my crew, usually consisting of one or two deckhands. As their Marine Officer, it is within my remit to train them, not only to carry out their role, but progress to a Relief Coxswain. Teaching them not only to pass an Advanced Powerboat course, but also to meet the requirements of knowledge to pass a 'Harbour Board' - effectively an exam set by the Harbour Master and his representatives. During my time within this role, I have also sat a second board to pass as a Marine Officer aboard 'Southampton Patrol'. Utilising the 17 metre Safehaven Interceptors, we act as the Harbour Masters representatives afloat. Enforcing local bylaws, patrolling large commercial vessels through the precautionary area, responding to maritime incidents such as oil spills, medical emergencies and SAR.
2nd Coxswain/Deckhand
Responsible for the safe embarking and disembarking of Pilots for all commercial shipping, carrying out full safety checks of the pilot launch, to include running gear, lights, watertight integrity, deck fittings, safety equipment and man overboard recovery systems. Maintenance and defect reporting of the aforementioned also fell to me. During this time, I was training to become a Marine Officer and become the skipper within a watch. I also arranged to be trained on the Southampton Patrol and workboat vessels, as well as a birthing assistant, to improve my overall knowledge and understanding of the district and our operation. During my time in this role I also acted as the health and safety representative for a year, negotiating safety issues as we relocated to a new pilot station in Endeavour Quay.
