•Maintenance and Upkeep Clean, scrub, sweep, and wash decks, superstructures, hull areas, and common spaces. Remove rust (chipping, scaling, grinding), prime, and paint surfaces to prevent corrosion from seawater. Perform general repairs and sanitation on deck equipment, lifeboats, rescue boats, cargo gear, and hatches. •Watchkeeping and Navigation Assistance Stand lookout watches: Scan for hazards, other vessels, or obstacles and report them. Steer the ship (helm duty) under officer supervision. Assist on the bridge with basic equipment during non-watch hours for training. •Mooring and Port Operations Handle mooring lines during berthing/unberthing. Assist with gangways, stores loading, and general port preparations. Cargo and Seamanship Tasks (especially on bulk carriers) Assist in cargo loading/discharging operations. Secure/lash cargo, check hatches for watertightness, and rig gear like slings or nets. Perform marlinspike seamanship: Splice ropes/wires, handle rigging, and maintain lines. Safety and Emergency Duties Participate in drills (fire, abandon ship, man overboard). Maintain safety equipment and follow protocols. Work aloft or in confined spaces when needed (with supervision). •General Duties Sort and dispose of trash/garbage properly. Follow orders promptly, maintain teamwork, and learn on-the-job. Contribute to overall ship cleanliness and efficiency.
