Caribbean Yacht Crew Season 2026/27: Antigua, St Maarten or Fort Lauderdale?

If you want a yacht job for the Caribbean season, September is a useful time to start making contacts. Your joining port could still be in the Mediterranean, even when the yacht's next programme is in the Caribbean.

That distinction already appears on Yachtee's jobs board. When we reviewed listings on 11 September 2026, some interior roles called for joining in Palma before an Atlantic crossing; others anticipated joining in Sint Maarten afterwards. These are individual vacancies, but they illustrate why it pays to read the joining arrangements before booking a flight.

For crew considering relocation, Antigua, St Maarten and Fort Lauderdale each offer a different starting point. The useful question is where you can reach suitable employers, with the right permissions and enough money to support the search.

The quick answer: investigate Antigua's English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour cluster for yachts gathering around the December charter show; St Maarten's Simpson Bay area for a Caribbean marina base; and Fort Lauderdale for a US-based search or a confirmed joining arrangement. Check entry conditions, work permissions and marina access before choosing. You can start applying while the yacht is still preparing to cross.

When does the Caribbean yacht crew season start in 2026?

There is no single opening day for recruitment. For this season's planning, the clearest published milestones fall between late October and December:

• 28 October–1 November 2026: the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show takes place in South Florida.
• 8 November 2026: ARC+ leaves Las Palmas for Cape Verde. Its onward Atlantic leg leaves Mindelo on 20 November, with prizegiving in Grenada on 10 December.
• 22 November 2026: the ARC leaves Las Palmas for Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia. Its Saint Lucia prizegiving is on 19 December.
• 4–9 December 2026: the Antigua Charter Yacht Show holds its 65th anniversary edition.

These dates help explain the autumn transition. The ARC events are cruising rallies with their own destinations; their schedules do not measure superyacht vacancies or tell you when a particular employer will hire.

Weather also matters. The US National Hurricane Center defines the Atlantic hurricane season as 1 June–30 November, with activity possible outside those dates. A yacht's departure depends on its passage plan and conditions. Treat proposed joining dates as something to confirm with the captain.

Our practical suggestion is to use September and October for applications, document checks and conversations about joining. Decide on a November or December Caribbean base using those conversations, accommodation availability and your entry conditions. A calendar date alone is a weak reason to relocate.

Antigua: English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour

Antigua offers a useful harbour cluster to investigate. The show organiser names three marinas for its 2026 edition: Nelson's Dockyard Marina, Antigua Superyacht Marina and Falmouth Harbour Marina. This gives you specific locations to research when comparing accommodation and arranging meetings. Official 2026 show announcement.

Older crew guides may refer to Antigua Yacht Club Marina. The marina now operates as Antigua Superyacht Marina & Resort, following a rebrand recorded in its operator's history. Knowing both names helps when someone gives you directions or mentions a berth.

Antigua is worth considering if your target yachts or professional contacts will be in these harbours. Before paying for accommodation, check the actual address, transport to your appointments and the property's cancellation terms around show week.

The charter show has registration categories and identity passes. Its programme centres on charter-industry business, yacht inspections and networking. Check eligibility with the organiser before planning to attend; being a jobseeker on the island does not establish access to the show or its yachts. Show registration information.

Choose Antigua when: you have a reason to focus on the English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour yachts, suitable accommodation and a clear plan for reaching employers.

St Maarten: Simpson Bay and the lagoon marinas

For a St Maarten search, begin with the Simpson Bay area on the Dutch side of the island. Simpson Bay Marina and Yacht Club Isle de Sol are concrete places to locate on your map and discuss with recruiters or a prospective captain.

Isle de Sol caters to large yachts and describes itself as an ISPS-compliant facility with a private entrance. Its published peak dates run from December through April. Those details establish the marina's facilities and seasonal terms; they do not establish a hiring peak or unrestricted dockwalking.

When comparing rooms, check travel time to the relevant marina, shops and appointments. Ask the marina office how visiting candidates should approach a yacht and whether an appointment or crew escort is required.

Be precise about location. Dutch Sint Maarten and French Saint-Martin share an island but have different entry rules. French Saint-Martin is outside the Schengen area, according to France-Visas. Check the requirements for both sides if your accommodation and prospective work involve crossing between them.

Choose St Maarten when: the yachts or interviews you are pursuing point to Simpson Bay, and you have checked the practicalities of staying and attending appointments there.

Fort Lauderdale: a US hub for a Caribbean-bound programme

Fort Lauderdale belongs in this comparison because the US may be your joining location for a yacht with a Caribbean itinerary. It is in Florida, and US entry and work rules apply.

FLIBS provides a dated autumn focal point. The organiser's 2026 show information lists locations including Bahia Mar, Hall of Fame Marina, Las Olas Marina and Pier Sixty-Six. Use the official map to understand distances and access arrangements; a list of show venues is not a dockwalking itinerary.

For someone already entitled to undertake the proposed work in the US, location choice can focus on employers, transport and accommodation. International candidates need to resolve the immigration position as part of the decision to travel.

A B1/B2 visa or ESTA approval is not a general yacht-work permit. The US State Department's B-1 guidance distinguishes permitted business activities from employment and identifies yacht crew as a special category requiring further guidance.

Choose Fort Lauderdale when: your US circumstances fit the planned activity, or you have a verified yacht joining arrangement and have confirmed the appropriate entry route. The size of the show alone is not enough reason to buy a ticket.

Check entry, job hunting and work permission separately

Permission to visit a country, permission to carry out your proposed job-search activities and permission to work need separate checks. A marina's approval to enter its docks settles only the access question.

Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua Immigration's general entry guidance lists onward or return travel, accommodation and evidence of funds among the requirements for visa-exempt visitors. Its immigration FAQ says an entry permit or extension ordinarily does not allow work, and that exemptions exist. Ask Immigration and the Labour Department how your nationality, proposed activity and any yacht joining arrangement are treated.

Dutch Sint Maarten

NetherlandsWorldwide says a short-stay Caribbean visa does not permit paid work and directs applicants to local authorities about work permits. Visa exemptions and qualifying short crew visits have their own conditions. Describe your situation accurately when checking: arriving to seek a role differs from arriving as an employed crew member joining a named yacht.

United States

The State Department gives a B-1 example for crew on a private yacht sailing from a foreign port and cruising in US waters for more than 29 days. CBP's B-1 guidance ties the yacht duties to foreign employment and a foreign home port. These are specific crew circumstances, not general permission to arrive and start daywork. Confirm the appropriate route with the relevant authority or a qualified immigration adviser before travel or work. Supply the vessel's operation, itinerary, employer and proposed duties; the label “yacht crew” leaves too much unanswered.

How to plan dockwalking in the Caribbean

Dockwalking means approaching yachts in person to introduce yourself and ask about work. Make it one part of a search that also includes suitable vacancies, recruitment contacts and referrals.

Start with the marina office or security team. Ask whether candidates may enter, whether CVs are accepted and whether you need a named appointment. Follow the current policy and approach a yacht only where permitted. Request an invitation before boarding.

Keep your introduction brief: the role you seek, relevant experience, current location and availability. Have a clear CV ready, then ask how the crew would prefer you to follow up. Avoid interrupting manoeuvres, guest movements or another obviously busy operation.

Treat a daywork offer as a separate decision. Confirm that you may lawfully undertake it, then agree the duties, hours, rate, payment arrangements and supervisor before starting.

After each useful conversation, record the next step. An agreed follow-up with a relevant head of department gives you more to act on than a pile of CVs left without context.

Build a relocation budget before choosing a hub

Ask accommodation providers for quotes covering your actual dates. Compare the total cost of staying near the people you need to meet, including transport. An inexpensive room can lose its advantage if every appointment requires a costly journey.

Your budget should include accommodation and deposits, food, local transport, phone data, laundry, document costs and appropriate insurance. Keep enough money for onward or return travel and unexpected changes.

A useful calculation is:

Search days you can fund = money remaining after travel, fixed costs and your emergency reserve ÷ expected daily living cost.

Use quotes and your own circumstances for the inputs. Plan on zero income during the search, then set a date to reassess your progress. If that budget buys only a short stay with no confirmed meetings, continue applying from your current base while you build stronger leads.

What to do before the yacht crosses the Atlantic

Open the full job brief and check the joining port, start date, experience requirements, documents and intended itinerary. A role described as “Caribbean” may ask you to join in Palma de Mallorca first.
